Drawing Classes with Karen Casey

 

 “The Basics and Beyond”

 

Saturdays March 1 – April 5, 12:00 – 2:30 pm
Tuition: $150 plus materials

 

Drawing is the key that unlocks the door to the visual arts! This class offers attentive instruction for students at beginning to intermediate levels of this most important foundation skill. Whether you are approaching drawing for the first time, or are looking for a chance to improve your knowledge, this class will help you develop your personal style while working in charcoal and pencils.  The class will focus on form, line, contour, gesture and composition through still life, portraiture, and working from a live model.

Painting Classes with Karen Casey

 

 Painting with Oils and Acrylics

 

Saturdays March 1 – April 5, 3:00 – 5:30 pm
Tuition: $150 plus materials

 

Find your creative voice through color and composition!  This class is geared to beginning and intermediate students who are interested in working with either oil or acrylic paints, or both. We will cover and review the basics of the medium and move into color theory, application, and painting techniques using still life and portraiture. Emphasis will be placed on composition and developing a personal style.

Watercolor Classes with Catherine Hillis

 

 “Everything but the Kitchen Sink” - Watercolor & Mixed Media (Master Class)

 

Saturday and Sunday March 1-2, 2008, 10am – 3pm both days
Tuition: $150 including some experimental supplies, students provide their own basic supplies

 

Hammerly House by Catherine Hillis

Beat the winter blues, treat yourself to a fun weekend and add to your watercolor technique.  Move further into watercolors as you explore non-traditional watermedia techniques to achieve the effects you want.  Students will also be able to experiment with combining techniques and media, including acrylics, pouring saturated watercolor, masking, collage, and stenciling.  Sunday’s class will be reserved for students to bring in paintings that are incomplete or unsuccessful and you will learn how to use experimental watermedia methods to make your paintings sing.

 

Students must provide their own supplies.  Additional experimental supplies will be provided.

 

 “More Flower Power” - Watercolor Workshop

 

Saturday and Sunday July 19-20, 2008, 9am – 2pm both days
Tuition: $150 including some materials

Students will work on depicting a beautiful array of flowers both outside in the garden (weather permitting) and in the studio at the arts center.  More details to follow.

 

About the Instructor:

 

 

Catherine Hillis is an accomplished and award-winning watercolor artist.  She has taught numerous workshops and her work is in collections across the United States and as far away as Russia and Japan. The hallmarks of her work are rich color and a touch of humor. She is a signature member of the Potomac Valley Watercolor Society and the Baltimore Watercolor Society, and a member of the Southern Watercolor Society, the Virginia Watercolor Society, and the National Watercolor Society.

Printmaking Classes

 

Introduction to Hand Printmaking Techniques

Tuesdays, March 4 – April 8, 2008 (6 weeks)
6:30 – 8:30 pm

Tuition: $160 including materials
Open to teens age 16 and up

 

We will explore relief printmaking and traditional Japanese methods of printing by hand.  The beauty of the methods covered in this class is that they are both very portable and relatively inexpensive for the beginner. Techniques include cutting methods for both linoleum and wood, reductive printing and collograph.

 

 

About the Instructor:

 

 

Heather Self is a professional printmaker and juried member of the Washington Printmakers Gallery. Heather studied printmaking at Pacific Northwest College of Art and Shepherd University. Her work is in various private collections in the United States and in Europe.

 Figure Model Sessions

 

“Second Saturdays” of the month: March 8, April 12, May 10
9:30 – 11:30 pm
Fee: Pre-register: $12/session; Drop in fee $14
Series Discount: $30 for all three sessions

 

Open to teens with parental permission.

 

Finally after years of requests, figure drawing is back!  Artists of all skill levels can benefit from direct observation of the human form during this open studio time with a live model. Participants bring their own working materials to depict the figure during both short and long poses. A monitor will be present to assist with questions and poses. We will begin this program once per month on the second Saturday – if interest supports additional sessions, we will expand the program with additional dates!

Pottery Classes

 

 Get a feel for it: Pottery for the non-committal – Instructor Amy Oliver

Saturday, February 23rd, 10am – 1pm

Tuition $35 including materials

 

 

Not sure you’re ready to take the plunge into the mud for an eight-week session?  This one-day workshop will get students familiar with the basics, including slab work, centering and simple shapes.  Start off slowly to see how you like working with clay, both hand-building and on the potters wheel.  Instructor demonstrations will inspire you to see just how far you can go in time!

 

 

 

Pottery with David Norton and Amy Oliver – 8 week sessions

 

 

RHAC’s well-known pottery program is a great way to learn the fine art of making wheel-thrown pottery, hand-building vessels and beautiful glazing.  Students are welcome to start at whatever level suits their experience, from rank beginner to seasoned amateur.

Beginners will learn basic techniques to get started: wedging, centering, pulling and finishing cylinders, bowls, cups and vases.  Emphasis in the intermediate and advanced classes depends on students’ interests and may include sculpture, tiles and raku firing. 

Open to beginners and up, teens welcome. Class limited to 8 students. 

Tuition: $220 (including 25 lbs. clay, glazes, and kiln firing).

All pottery classes meet 6:30-9:30pm for 8 weeks

After-School Drawing & Painting Classes

 

3rd – 4th graders, six weeks

Tuesdays, February 26 – April 8, 2008 (no class March 18) 4:00 – 5:30 pm

 

Tuition: $120 includes materials.

 

Children who want to have fun while learning important art skills will enjoy this class. Children will work with a variety of drawing and painting materials, techniques and subjects, applying their new ideas to fun mixed-media projects.  Great for kids who are ready for more than they get during regular school-day instruction.

After-School Clay Classes with Amy Oliver

 

Have a good time getting messy while you learn how to mold, sculpt, shape and glaze clay by hand.  Students will complete several projects using the same basic tools and techniques used by professional potters.  Lots of personal attention and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere for your creative kid!

 

Four week class, fee $55 includes materials

K – 3rd Grade: 4-5 pm

4th – 5th Grades: 5:15 – 6:15 pm

Hands-On Studio for Little Artists

This open studio for preschoolers introduces children to a variety of art media and techniques through stories, song, movement and hands-on experimentation. Children and their parents explore art together with different materials each session.  A monitor will oversee the group, but children will be free to make whatever they like without the pressure of trying to create a specific project.  Parents are welcome to work with their kids or to participate in ongoing RHAC volunteer projects with other parents during class.

 

Drop-ins welcome, or call by Monday before each session to reserve your spot.  Parents must accompany children.

 

Fee per session: $7/child; $12/2 children; $18/3 children. Older school-aged siblings are welcome!
(fees are collected to cover the costs of materials and overhead.  The session host is a volunteer.)

David Vandeventer aka Fiddlin’ Dave has been studying the folk origins of the fiddle for over 20 years.  He is a fiddle and mandolin instructor, and an active member of The Woodshedders, and David Via & Corn Tornado as well.  Other notable artists he has recorded with are Keller Williams, Larry Keel, Cracker, Sammy Sheilor, Zan McCleod, and Ralph Gordon.

 

Bluegrass & Old Time Workshop for Guitar and Mandolin with Danny Knicely & Tara Lindhardt

Advanced beginners to intermediate/advanced students welcome.  Tara and Danny will split students into groups depending on skill level. Beginners will practice some basic techniques and tunes, while more advanced students will delve into specifics for bringing their playing up to the next level.  Both groups will touch upon jam session etiquette, common practices and the stylistic distinctions between Bluegrass and Old Time music.

 

About the Instructors:

 

 

Danny Knicely is a fourth generation Appalachian multi-instrumentalist from a Virginia family steeped in mountain music tradition.  He has won many awards for both his mandolin and guitar expertise such as First Place in the mandolin contest of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival.  He has recorded and toured nationally and internationally with many groups including the award winning Magraw Gap, David Via and Corn Tornado, James Leva and Purgatory Mountain, and Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble, featuring Mark Schatz and Eileen Carson. Danny has also performed with Keller Williams, Vassar Clements, Tony Rice, Mac Wisemen, Tim O’Brian, Sam Bush, Larry Keel, Robin and Linda Williams, and Daryl Anger to name a few.  Festivals where Danny has performed include Merlefest, the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Rockygrass, Grey Fox, Philadelphia Folk Festival, and Floyd Fest.

Special Needs Classes:

Da Vinci Studio for People with Disabilities
Artists and creative people with disabilities are welcome to join this facilitated program. While disabilities can present specific motor or cognitive challenges, they can also provide new insight and unique perspectives for self-expression. Art educator led sessions offer participants access to adaptive tools and techniques in a friendly, non-competitive environment with many different art media.

 

Sessions: Every Tuesday and Thursday, 10-11 AM in the gallery.

Pam Oliver is an active volunteer with VSA Arts, a national organization dedicated to creating access to artistic opportunities for people of all abilities.  She holds a BA in art education, and has extensive experience working with people with disabilities.
