Introduction to Traditional Botanical Art

Course Description:
Local botanical artist Karen Coleman will discuss the tradition of botanical art, the current renaissance in contemporary botanical art, and the steps to an effective drawing and painting. Although this will be mainly lecture format, students will have the opportunity to draw a small botanical subject. This one-session workshop will be an introduction to extended classes on creating botanical art, which will be offered in the spring of 2011.

Class is conducted in a workshop/atelier setting where students are encouraged to develop their own creative projects. We will have regular critiques and discussions about art. We will also help with portfolio development for any students applying to art school. This class is designed for middle or high school students with a special interest/aptitude in visual arts who could benefit from more intensive and focused instruction. The first session, Part One, is geared toward discovering and developing visual style and conceptual ideas. Part Two is about refining technique and deepening skill levels.

Observational Drawing

Understanding the visual language begins with drawing. It is considered the single most important studio discipline and basic to visual thinking and expression. Observational drawing encourages immediate and intimate vision and invites us to explore the poetry of our visual experiences. This course is for students at all levels of experience and consists of discussions about masterworks, incremental exercises, critique, demonstrations, short and long drawings.

What is likeness? The most difficult subject to draw or paint from life is the human head. Learning how to create meaningfully complex images of the head is challenging and rewarding. Using classroom demonstrations, incremental exercises, and long studies, students explore the structure and expressive issues related to drawing and painting the head.

Printmaking by Hand

We will explore both modern and traditional Japanese printmaking techniques. We will learn how to carve and print wood and linoleum blocks. We will also build a collograph board. Course Description:
This class is for experienced ceramics students. Learn to push the limits of clay and build more advanced forms by combining wheel thrown components with handbuilding techniques. We will Alter and combine multiple forms to create large vessels and unique art pieces. In addition particular emphasis will be placed on teaching various surface decoration techniques. Group and Individual discussions will help guide this class to explore new and creative forms in ceramic art.Taught by ceramic artist Amy Manson who has studied Advanced Wheel and Handbuilding techniques at Penland School of Craft, Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts, and Charlotte Clayworks in North Carolina.

Braided Roving Rug Workshop

Students will make a 2 X 3 foot rug using natural and dyed color roving from Loudoun Valley Sheep Producers (LVSPA) sheep farms. You will learn design considerations, braiding process, felting the braid and sewing the braid into a rug. The process is fast, fun and easy. It's a wonderful a hand made Holiday heirloom gift!

Course Description:
Basic watercolor techniques, including color mixing and maximizing the use of light to make a painting glow. The focus will be on landscapes, including skies, trees, water, fences and structures.

Brushes: Half-inch flat brush, No. 8 round brush. Paints: Basic yellow, such as aureolin yellow or gamboge, ultramarine blue, cobalt blue, alizarin crimson, burnt sienna, and red, such as Windsor red. Paper: 140-pound cold-pressed in tablet form or in individual sheets

Introduction to Music through Piano

Course Description:
Aislin Kavaldjian began piano at age five and has gone on to play in the Loudon Valley Orchestra, master several other instruments, and start her own band, The Polka Dots. This is her third year teaching piano. Students will begin with basic piano and sight-reading techniques and progress through a combination of fun exercises and the mastery of songs. *Additional materials may be needed as students progress.

A Crash Course in Play Writing
Instructor: Meredith Bean McMath

Course Description:
Class 1

An introduction to the basics of classic story structure as well as comedy, presentations by the two actors who will be performing dramatic readings of the students' plays at the end of the crash course, and a play writing exercise to create the outline of a ten-minute play. Materials provided: Basics of story conflict, story arc, comedic and dramatic "rules," and further at-home writing exercises. Homework: fleshing out ten-minute play begun in class.

Class 2
This class includes a second writing exercise, guest speaker, and discussion by the two actors and the director, McMath, of how writers, actors and directors work through a play. Materials provided: play formatting requirements, manuscript submission guidelines, production information. Homework: finish ten-minute play and bring in four copies of script.

Class 3
Another writing exercise (this one created from the day's headlines), guest speaker, and time spent with the director and actors as they interpret each of the student's finished plays. Materials provided: information on copyright, and theatre resources.

The Presentation
Dramatic reading of plays; open to the public (donations at the door to RHAC welcome).

Sewing 101
Instructor: Chip York

Course Description:
This is an introductory class; sewing starting at the very basics. Students will be applying skills and knowledge to their choice of projects beginning with the third week. There will be one class held at a fabric store, to help students understand the materials acquisition process and the materials available. From the third class on, time will be divided between lecture and practical. Unless special arrangements are made students will be expected to provide their own sewing machine, scissors, their own project and basic supplies.

The instructor, Chip York, has been sewing for over 30 years, starting from childhood. He has sewn costumes, casual day-wear, formal-wear and bridesmaid dresses. In recent years his focus has been on neo-Victorian costuming and custom patterns. While his primary focus has been sewing for family and friends he has sewn on consignment for bridesmaids and burlesque performers. Chip is also a member artist of The Gateway Gallery.

Beginning Hand-Quilting

This class is designed for beginner quilters. We will be piecing a simple wall hanging in which you will learn how to select fabric, cut fabric with a rotary cutter, piece with a sewing machine and quilt by hand. Requirements: Students need to have a sewing machine they can bring to class.

Amy Berringer been quilting for 20 years. Her quilts have received awards and praise. She has taught many family members and friends to quilt over the years all whom have become successful quilters. Amy is passionate about keeping the art alive and passing down the skills from generation to generation.

Course Description:
The possibilities are endless! Come and check out what you can do with a few simple handbuilding techniques. Learn the most current and creative ways of working with slabs, coils and pinching to create virtually any form you can dream up. Experiment with a wide range of color and texture using slips, stains and glazes on your functional or sculptural artworks. Individual and group discussions will help guide you as you develop your ideas. This class is appropriate for all skill levels.

Taught by Ceramic Artist, Amy Manson who has worked with and taught Handbuilding in both North and South Carolina for the last 8 years. She has studied Handbuiling at Penland School of Craft and Odyssey Center for Ceramic Arts and cannot wait to share her unique handbuilding projects with the class.

Course Description:
A course designed to get you strumming AND singing! Starting with a few basic chords, we will learn strumming and picking technique. We will apply our first chords to a Bob Dylan song that everyone can sing. It has sixteen verses, so all will have a solo and we'll not quit playing till the song is over! At the end of six weeks, we will have added three other songs to our repetoire and gotten off to a great start! Folksong Two will continue where we left off, with other songs of the sixties.

Prerequisite: Bring your own guitar. *Instructor has made special arrangments with local music store to discount you nylon string class guitar should you need to purchase.

Course Description:
If you like to sing and are interested in improving your vocal instrument, my gentle vocal exercises and breathing technique will enable you to sing better and with added confidence. Main goal: learn how to get a "singers breath", support your voice and stop singing in the throat. Each participant will receive a friendly analysis of their instrument, participate in group and solo vocal exercises and learn the song of their choice or teacher recommendation, to present at the end of course recital. Course Description: Write Away! Beginning Writing for Creative Kids. Learn to create stories with vivid characters and put them into all kinds of tricky situations before leading them on to victory (or a really oogy and tragic end). Just a few examples of where imagination may take us:

What would happen on the strangest day ever? Write about life on a planet where teddy bears are feared and vampire bats smell like cinnamon.Create a world just the way YOU would like it to be.

Anything is possible as we Write Away! in this fun and imaginative creative writing class.

Bobbi Carducci is a freelance writer and columnist. She wrote her first short story at the age of eight and never stopped. Her short stories continue to win awards. Her monthly column, Buy the Book appears in print and online by in About Families Publications.

Bobbi is the President of Community Voice Media, LLC, publisher of "Young Voices of Loudoun County" and "Young Voices -The Stories Begin", including short stories written by Loudoun County students, published in 2006 and 2007.

She is the Executive Director of the Young Voices Foundation, a 501 c 3 educational nonprofit established to mentor young writers across the United States.

Young Voices Foundation sponsors continuous no fee writing contests open to students in grades K-12. Winning stories are published on the Young Voices Foundation website. www.youngvoicesfoundation.org. Young Voices Foundation sponsors the Young Voices Awards honoring books that inspire, mentor, and/or educate readers of all ages. www.youngvoicesawards.com

Her first book for young readers is scheduled for publication later this year.

Knitting Workshops

Course Description:

Workshop I: Knitting for Beginners
In this class you will learn the basics of the cast-on, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, the bind off. We will make a small scarf which will be completed in the class.

Workshop II. Knitting for Intermediates - Part 1
By now you know how to do the basics and you are ready for some new skills. We will make a small hat in the class which will teach knitting in the round by using a circular needle and double pointed needles. We will also learn how to decrease and how to make an "I" cord. This project will be completed in the class.

Workshop III. Knitting for Intermediates - Part 2
In this class we will perfect our knitting-in-the-round-techniques, learn ribbing, and simple increasing as we make a pair of mittens for a child. At least one mitten should be completed in the class.

Victoria Christie Healy has been knitting for over 30 years. She currently teaches several knitting classes for Fairfax County at the Reston Community Center. She is a member of the Loudoun Valley Sheep Producers Association where she is active participant in the Wool Shop.

Ukranian Egg Decorating Workshop

This class is designed to teach traditional Ukranian Egg Decorating. We will be using a process of hot wax and dyes to create beautiful designs on eggs. You will be taught each step of the process so you will be able to continue to enjoy this art for years to come. You will leave the class with Christmas ornaments you will be able to hang on a tree.

Amy Berringer is a local artist. She descoverd the art of Ucranian egg decorating while watching Mr. Rogers Neighborhood with her children. The show inspired her to order books and supplies to create these beautiful eggs. Once she started she was hooked and has enjoied making them for family and friends and selling them at art fairs for Christmas and Easter.

"Fresh Paint": Plein Aire 2-Day Watercolor Workshop with Catherine Hillis

Award-winning watercolorist Catherine Hillis will lead students in a 2-day workshop, exploring the power of plein aire painting. Both days will include sketching on site in and around the historic village of Round Hill and then bringing sketches into the studio to produce a carefully designed painting. The instructor will provide daily demonstrations, critiques and one on one coaching. Students must provide their own watercolor supplies, sketchbook and pencils; a digital camera is highly recommended (see supply list). Students may have the opportunity to display their work ...

About the artist: Catherine Hillis has painted all her life, winning numerous awards and honors at competitive shows regionally and nationally.

Mrs. Hillis primarily paints in watercolors, including busy street scenes, intricate florals and her favorite, the historic sites near her home on the Blue Ridge in Northern Virginia. The hallmarks of her work are rich color and a touch of humor. Most recently, her work has been selected for the North Lights' publication: "Splash 12," and she will serve as Artist in Residence at Hot Springs National Park during the summer of 2010.
