Preschool
aged children explore the world of art by getting their little hands
on a variety of materials. They will be introduced to various aspects
of design, including line, pattern, color, texture, and shape. Stories,
creative movement and music will also be utilized to reinforce the
concepts. Parents/caregivers are asked to stay (and may have the
opportunity to do volunteer projects for RHAC!), though they are
not required to participate if their child is able to work independently.
This is a drop-in class - just stop by. No pre-registration required!
Skrobanki (scratched eggs)

Skrobanki (scratched eggs) are a traditional Easter time craft in eastern Europe.
Painted eggs are scratched to create geometric patterns or springtime scenes. Join
local artist Jill Evans-Kavaldjian in a workshop to create your own beautiful
heirloom eggs. A great seasonal activity for kids and grownups. Ages 4 -10 will
need parental supervision. Mess factor: low.

Beginning
pottery students will learn the basics of pottery, classroom safety,
clay properties, cutting, wedging and centering on the pottery wheel
and how to make a basic cylinder. Intermediate students will be
presented more challenging lessons, pitcher spouts, handling and
altering form. Students will learn various technique for glazing
bisque pots. Training slab work and decoration of pots.
Sandi
Fanning is the instructor for these classes. Sandi has been a potter
for seven years with several years training in advanced pottery.
She owns and operates the Red Deer Pottery studio located near Bluemont,
Virginia. Sandi is a member of the Shenandoah Potter's Guild.

to Digital Photography

Go
from snapshots to pleasing photographs by learning how to get the
most out of any digital camera in this basic overview of digital
photography. This course will cover camera settings and operations,
composition, lighting, depth-of-field, filters, and the use of popular
photo editing tools to downsize your photos for email. It is appropriate
for anyone who is new to the world of digital photography, whether
using a compact camera or a digital SLR with interchangeable lenses.
Requirements:
Students must have a digital camera, which they should bring to
each class, along with the owner's manual and a memory card or stick.
Note:
If you don't have your owner's manual, you may be able to download
one from the camera manufacturer's web site. A manual is not required
but strongly encouraged.

Beginner or refresher course! Learn to block in a painting, color
mixing and ways to apply paint to a canvas is demonstrated. Using
Oils or Acrylics students will be provided a solid foundation for
exploring, shapes, mass, perspective and grissallie (old master
technique) painting. Composition, color, value, materials and techniques
are covered. You will develop observational skills and knowledge
of the elements of design for painting still life, landscape, and
the model. Learn toning and stretching a canvas. This is a class
you will want to repeat. Drawing experience is a plus. Model fees
are extra.

Course covers charcoal, pencil, pen and ink drawing techniques.
Tools and techniques will be demonstrated. Students will learn to
use line, value, gesture and perspective as they explore compositions.
Also students will develop how to "see" as an artist while
drawing still life, landscape and figures. This is a course students
will want to repeat to develop their artistic skills and abilities.
Course provides a good transition into painting. Model fees are
extra.

Beginning
wheel students will learn the fundamentals of working with clay
in a supportive and personal environment. Students will learn how
to wedge, center, throw cylinder and bowl forms, and throw off the
hump. Students will be introduced to basic glaze surface treatments.
Intermediate students will learn to throw larger forms, pull and
attach handles, throw lidded forms and plates, and further develop
ceramic surfaces. All students will have access to open studio to
develop their skill outside of classroom instruction. Please bring
a sketchbook.
Lovettsville, Virginia studio artist and educator, Kristen Swanson, has had her hands in clay for 18 years. Kristen has seven years of experience teaching ceramic art to children and adults in her community through her personal studio and classroom, White House Ceramics Studios. Kristen exhibits her unique porcelain art locally and nationally and sells her work around the globe. She holds degrees in Elementary Education from Virginia Tech and a Fine Arts Degree in Ceramics from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Beadwoven
Cuff Bracelet

Learn
how to do even-count flat peyote stitch to make a bracelet base
that can be embellished in lots of creative ways. We will add embellished
edging and a clasp in class so you can wear your bracelet home.
This class is designed for beginners, or for experienced beadweavers
who want to make a quick and easy bracelet base they can embellish
with their own beadwork. Learn an easy way to start those tricky
first three rows!
Bring
your own small scissors. Other supplies (everything you need) will
be in color-coordinated kits for $9.00.
Each
student will receive written instructions and ideas for embellishments
and bracelet closures, and a peyote stitch "starter board"
to take home.

the basics.
We will spend some time becoming acquainted with jewelry tools and
wire. Then move on to skills such as making jump rings and links,
clasps, and wire charms ending with a bracelet to proudly wear home.
Finishing techniques will also be discussed. After learning these
skills, you'll be able to move on to designing and making your own
bracelets, earrings and necklaces!

Experience the art of painting on canvas in a relaxed studio atmosphere.
Bring home a small painting in just one class. You will start by mixing
and blending your paints to create colorful abstract paintings. Then move
on to using color to paint skies, clouds, water, waves, sunsets and a
variety of colorful landscapes. As classes progress, you are encouraged to
develop your own personal style of painting.
One small canvas, palette with paints and all neccessary painting supplies
are included with class. Extra canvases and paints may be purchases during
class for $5.00.
Optional Supply List: You are welcome to bring your own paints and
canvases. Acrylic or oil paints, brushes, and larger canvas sizes.
Examples: 8X10 or 16X20 or 15X30.
