If you have a story you've always wanted to write and illustrate, here's the class that will put it on the page. We'll create a book dummy and layout and design a small book that can either be your personal story or a new version of a favorite tale. We will discuss preparation and then execute a finished illustration - a sample - for your book. Kate will also cover creating proposals for publishers, the ins and outs of publishing contracts, and how to create a one-of-a-kind book for your personal library. Beginning her life as a illustrator for the Harvard Museum of Natural History's Museum of Comparative Zoology, Kate has since gone on to illustrate children's books for Houghton Mifflin, A.A. Knopf, Little, Brown and Co., and Crown Books for Young Readers.

LIGHT AND COMPOSITION: PHOTOGRAPHY with MARY LOUISE RAVESE
Wednesday mornings 10-12:30 pm (5 sessions)
February 4, 11 & 25, March 4 & 25
5-10 students possible
The difference between a snapshot and a work of art often comes down to the photographer's understanding and use of light and composition. In this class students will learn to see the light to gain awareness of the color of light and how light direction and intensity can draw attention to different aspects of the subject matter. We'll also explore and analyze different compositional techniques using examples from a variety of visual art disciplines. This knowledge of both light and composition will give students tools they can then apply to their own photography, whether digital or film. This class is appropriate for photographers at all skill levels and is especially well suited for those interested in nature and fine art photography and for those who paint or draw from photographs.
Meets in second story classroom - accessed by building's back stair.
$200 if registered by January 21, 2009
