Barrel Firing Workshop, Sat, June 13, Begins at 10 AM
Instructor: Erin McQuary
Saturday June 13, 2026 Begins at 10:00 AM, $150, Materials included.
Join us for a day of barrel firing! In this workshop you will learn to barrel fire pots-a modified version of pit firing.
Participants will learn to treat their pots with chemical colorants, copperwire, and organic materials. Once treated you will learn how to prepare the barrels for a successful firing and how to load the pots for the best effects. When cool pots will be removed then washed, waxed, and sealed.
Barrel fired pots are not food safe and will not hold water. The pots you create in the workshop are one of a kind and cannot be replicated.
We will begin at 10AM, and we’ll fire through the late afternoon. Bring a snack or lunch.
Important!!!
Participants will be provided with 5 lbs of Raku clay and terra sigillata. Pots may be handbuilt or wheel thrown. Closed or semi closed forms without texture work best, think vases or bottles. Pots must be made of the Raku clay provided, treated with terra sigillata and bisque fired to cone 08.
Erin will be doing a 08 bisque fire at RHAC. All pots must be bone dry, treated with terra sigillata and delivered to RHAC no later than Friday May 22nd. If your pots are not ready by then it will be your responsibility to have them bisque fired elsewhere before the workshop.
Please contact Erin McQuary to arrange pickup of materials or with any questions you may have. Materials are provided but feel free to collect organic materials to use at the workshop-pine needles, seaweed, bones, flowers, eggshells etc.
This is an all day event, rain or shine, we will be outside so dress appropriately and bring a camping chair. Please also bring a dish/snack to pass, while the barrels burn down it will be a great opportunity to meet and hangout with other potters from different studios
